The state of Michigan had 97 state parks and Recreation areas as of 2007. That number has dwindled to less then 73 parks as of the beginning of 2010. The budget cuts for the MDNR (the Michigan Department of Natural Resources) has required many cutbacks in park staff, maintenance and improvements on existing park facilities. Many other State parks, Recreation areas and State Forest campgrounds are slated for closure during the 2010 budget year unless a solid financial system is set in place to fund our state Parks in Michigan.
