Back problems can range from minor pain to major disability. All back problems should be treated as serious, and seeing a doctor is definitely the best plan if you start to experience back pain. Once cleared by a doctor, various outdoor activities can still be performed, and might even help.

The following may help minimize risk of injury, or allow you to keep going if you do have minor back pain.

  • When wearing packs, try to carry much of the weight on on your waist belt, not on your shoulders.
  • If you have a shoulder or upper back problem, try using waist packs rather than daypacks.
  • Swimming, including most types of scuba, has very low impact on your back.
