Backcountry is easy to find. Just follow these simple directions.

  1. Get in your car and drive out of town.
  2. When you get past the farms, stop.
  3. Get out of your car and walk into the woods.
  4. Stop. You're there.

Any wilderness area, once you get away from the roads, off the paved trails, out of sight of buildings, away from civilization, that's backcountry. Why not just call it "the woods" or "wilderness"? You can, and people do.

Where you really need to use the word backcountry, though, is when you're referring to the camping done while backpacking or sea kayaking through wilderness. There, the term backcountry is universal.
