Batteries
From Trail-Finder -- Dedicated to getting you outside
Not so long ago, you didn't carry any batteries into backcountry. Today, there's a few things you should carry batteries for.
- GPS: Everyone can use one of these.
- Flashlight: Don't leave your car without one of these in the bottom of your pack.
- Lantern: Some people like to use these in camp, and there are some small, light, LED lanterns available that make sense to carry in your backpack.
- Navigation lights: If you're doing much night canoeing or kayaking, these can be lifesavers.
- Camera: Never a necessity, but often good to carry, anyway.
GPS's usually run off either AA or AAA batteries. Some cameras also use AA or AAA batteries. For maximum redundancy, buy a small durable flashlight which uses the same type of batteries. This allows you to just carry one extra set of batteries, and move batteries from your flashlight to GPS if lost, or camera to flashlight if on the trail after dark.
