Book bag
From Trail-Finder -- Dedicated to getting you outside
Book bags are among the smallest packs available. Although not really ideal for the purpose, book bag-style backpacks are commonly used for short to medium length hikes.
If buying a new pack for outdoor use, you should consider a standard daypack or hydration pack instead. Both can also be used as a book bag, if needed, but are usually better designed for active, outdoor use.
One place where book bags may actually be ideal is as a first backpack for young children. Although small children can't carry a large amount of weight, they can easily carry their own water bottle, a snack, and rain gear. Since they're only carrying a few pounds, and it's likely to be treated pretty roughly, inexpensive book bags can be ideal for younger children.
