From Trail-Finder -- Dedicated to getting you outside
Overview
Canteens are a type of water bottle which has been used for decades. During WWI and WWII, the popularity of canteens surged, spilling over into youth outdoor groups such as boy scouts and girl scouts. As they replaced water skins, and have now largely been replaced by new options, such as hydration packs.
Types of Canteens
The original canteens were large, disk-shaped metal cans, carried in fabric holders, and held with a strap over your shoulder.
These were eventually replaced by smaller, plastic, belt-mounted canteens in holsters.
Newer canteens are available with pull-top valves and insulation
