First aid, as used in outdoor activities, comes in several levels.

  • Basic First Aid: This is the stuff covered in most classes. Useful not only on the trail, but at home, too.
  • Wilderness First Aid: One level up is wilderness first aid. Basic First Aid assumes that, in a serious situation, an ambulance is a maximum of 30 minutes away. Wilderness first aid assumes the ambulance may be days away. There's more emphasis on treatments that handle long-term care.
  • Wilderness First Responder: If you're an outdoor guide, you should probably be certified in this. Wilderness First Responders are trained in even more than Wilderness First Aid.
  • Wilderness EMT: This is a professional certification, comparable to Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs) on ambulances around the world, but with the added skills needed to deep-wilderness rescues.
