Overview
Dogs are great companions, and most medium and large dogs love going hiking with their human companions. There's no reason to leave them at home when you're going hiking. If you're going on a short, couple hour trip, your dog probably doesn't need a pack. If, on the other hand, you're going on a long, all-day day hike, a multi-day backpacking trip, or if you're not able to carry a backpack yourself, maybe your best friend can do it for you.
Cautions
Fit is just as important for a dog pack as it is for a human pack. Maximum weight can be even more of an issue. Be sure to check with your vet to determine how much can be carried comfortably.
Breaking In a Pack
Carrying a pack isn't natural for a dog. Start with it around the house, with just enough weight to stop it from bouncing around. Then use it for walks around the neighborhood. As your dog gets comfortable with it, you can gradually add more weight. How do you know if it's the right amount? If you take out the pack and your dog looks excited, you're probably doing it right.
Pack selection
Not a lot of pet stores carry dog packs suitable for long backcountry use. You can check with your vet, with larger pet stores, or with other hikers for suggestions, but you'll probably have to go on-line to buy them. Look for an appropriate length, especially the distance between the two lower straps, which have to fit comfortably between the legs, and the total height, which shouldn't be any taller than your dog's body (not including legs or head).
