Overview

Emergency kits are the collection of gear which you carry with you into backcountry, but hope you won't need. There are several components.

Components of an Emergency Kit

  • First aid kit: The first aid kit is generally the first thing that people add to their pack for emergencies. Most commercially available kits include some bandages, a few aspirin, etc. Specially designed first aid kits for hiking and kayaking are better, but still may not have everything you want or need. Consider these as starting points, then add anything you personally need. Remember to refill them if you use something.
  • Survival kit: This small, light container should contain a large collection of items useful in an emergency. Toss this into your pack and ignore it.
  • Flashlight: Be sure to check the batteries regularly.
  • Rain gear: This can be as much as a full goretex suit, or as little as a disposable poncho.
  • Emergency blanket: Really part of a survival kit, but it generally won't fit in the box, so it's listed separately here.
