Lantern

Lanterns are any free-standing or hanging light, generally used in at nights while camping. The traditional camping lantern is the Coleman white gas lantern, shown below.

While these lanterns do provide good light, they're a bit larger than most people want to carry in a pack, and at four pounds, plus fuel, there's even more reason to look further. These are now mostly limited to car camping

For backcountry use, small flashlights which convert to lanterns are much more popular, both because they are very light, and because you're probably carrying them, anyway.
