Water pumps are sometimes carried in kayaks and canoes. If you roll, or just flood your boat, a basic bilge pump can help restore your buoyancy, and help you dry out, too. Water pumps come in a two main varieties.

Hand-held Pumps

These inexpensive, hand-held pumps are basic plastic rods about 18" (0.5m) long. You just stick the bottom in the boat and pump the handle on the top until most of the water's gone.

Built-in Pumps

Some kayaks include built-in, foot-operated bilge pumps. These add to the cost of the boat, but they are more convenient.
