A waist pack is an alternative to a more traditional backpack for both hiking and mountain biking. They are also popular for trail running. Waist packs, formerly called "fanny packs" come in various sizes. The larger ones can work well as day packs. For hikers with back problems, a waist pack may be the only way to carry enough gear.
